One of the best home weekend projects out there is painting a room inside your house; it lets you express your personal style and improve your home, not to mention it’s affordable and can be completed in just a day. That said, if you really want to embark on an interior painting project over the upcoming weekend, you should be sure to keep these four things in mind.
1. Gather All Your Supplies Beforehand
One of the biggest ways to lose a lot of time during a painting project is having to pause halfway through for a trip to the hardware store. In order to prevent this, go to the store a day or two before your designated painting day and pick up everything you’ll need. You’ll want to grab painter’s tape, angled brushes and rollers, paint trays, drop cloths, lint-free rags or paper towels, your actual paint, and a few other odds and ends depending on your project. Don’t forget to have a flathead screwdriver for opening the paint cans!
2. Start Prepping the Evening Before
The first step of painting a room actually has nothing to do with the paint itself; you must first prepare the space for the project. Move furniture away from the walls or out of the room entirely, remove outlet covers from the walls, take down artwork and pictures, and cover the floors and anything else you don’t want to get paint on with drop cloths. Once this is done, tape off the trim, doors, window frames, and baseboards, and repair any damage on the walls.
3. Paint Efficiently & Strategically
Even when just painting a single room, it’s still in your best interest to work efficiently so that your results turn out their best. Start off by using your angled brush to cut in along the edges and corners of the room. Once this dries, you can begin rolling in an overlapping “W” or “M” pattern, trying to keep a wet edge. After your first coat has had about an hour or two to dry, go ahead and paint your second, while leaving enough time for last-minute touch-ups once everything has dried.
4. Don’t Neglect Cleanup
After you’ve finished painting and your final coat has dried, you can carefully remove all of the painter’s tape from the walls. Also be sure to rinse off your brushes and store them correctly, and dispose of any trash and drop cloths before moving anything back into the room or replacing outlet covers and fixtures.
Painting a room in a day is a surprisingly manageable weekend project if you follow the above steps, but if it still seems like a lot, don’t fret—a team of professionals can always get the job done quickly and correctly!
