If you’ve recently stepped down the paint aisle at your local home improvement store, you might’ve been quickly impressed or overwhelmed by the vast selection of paint available! With virtually endless options lining these shelves, it can sometimes be difficult to find the perfect choice for your project. But one thing that you should be considering before all else is the nature of your project: are you painting indoors or outdoors? Believe it or not, you’ll need a specialized type of paint depending on what you’re doing! Here’s more about a few of the key differences between exterior and interior paints and how they’re each used to produce spectacular and lasting results.

What Sets Exterior Paints Apart?

As the name implies, exterior house paints are designed to be applied to the outside of a home or building. These paints are designed with long-term flexibility in mind, which allows them to expand or contract seasonally with the hot or cold weather. They also usually include additives to increase their resistance to fading, mildew, and the effects of other natural forces. That said, exterior paints aren’t just for show—in addition to beautifying the outside of your home, they impart all kinds of uniquely beneficial advantages!

How Are Interior Paints Unique?

When painting the interior of your home, you don’t have to worry about the same things as you would for an exterior paint project—which is why these paints are formulated differently. These products account for scuff- and scrape-resistance and can also hold up to the occasional scrubbing. These properties make the paint much more rigid, which is ideal for indoor rooms but would lead to cracking when applied outside.

Interior house paints also use less unhealthy materials in the solvents, meaning that fewer gases evaporate into your home’s atmosphere (compared to if you used exterior paint indoors). Additionally, if you tried to use interior paints on the outside of your home, you wouldn’t be very pleased with your results! The paint would quickly crack and peel, and it might also fade and grow mildew surprisingly fast.

The bottom line is both of these types of paints have their respective uses and notable advantages, meaning that whether you’re aiming to paint your home’s interior, exterior, or both, you’re set up for lasting beauty and success!
